Why was it born?

LC-UPC-LC-UPC-Duplex-2-0mm2

Since the multimode fiber (MMF) entered the market in the 1980s, it has experienced the evolution from OM1, OM2, OM3 to OM4, the effective bandwidth supported continues to increase, and the transmission distance is further.
With the increasing demand for high-bandwidth and high-speed networks, in order to satisfy users' access to data centers and improve the performance of data centers, this requires that multimode fiber support for wavelengths needs to be more diversified. A new type of optical fiber jumper OM5 came into being.
What is the definition?
The Broadband Multimode Fiber (WBMMF) developed by the TIA Joint Working Group is a laser-optimized multimode fiber patch cord that specifies broadband characteristics for wavelength division multiplexing and is called OM5 in TIA / EIA492AAAE. The purpose of this new optical fiber classification method is to provide support for a variety of "short" wavelengths between 850nm and 950nm. The wavelength division multiplexing technology of single-mode fiber is used to extend the usable wavelength range during network transmission. After the polymerization, the wavelength is suitable for high-bandwidth applications. Supports 4 wavelengths on a core multimode fiber, reducing the number of fiber cores required to 1/4. At present, the OM5 optical fiber specification has been issued as TIA-492AAAE by the Communications Industry Association, and is released as the sixth edition of IEC60793-2-10. The OM5 and TIA-492AAAE specifications are in ISO / IEC11801 third edition and the American National Standards Association wiring standard ANSI / TIA -568.3-D is also recognized.
What are the advantages?
Widely recognized: OM5 fiber patch cord was originally released as TIA-492AAAE by the Communications Industry Association, and was unanimously approved in the ANSI / TIA-568.3-D revision opinion collection issued by the American National Standards Institute;
High scalability: OM5 fiber jumpers can combine short-wavelength division multiplexing (SWDM) and parallel transmission technology in the future, and only require 8-core broadband multimode fiber (WBMMF) to support 200 / 400G Ethernet application;
Reduce cost: OM5 fiber jumper draws on the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology of single-mode fiber to extend the usable wavelength range during network transmission. It can support 4 wavelengths on a 1-core multimode fiber and convert the required fiber core The number is reduced to 1/4 before, which greatly reduces the wiring cost of the network;
Compatibility and strong interoperability: OM5 fiber jumpers can support traditional applications just like OM3 fiber jumpers and OM4 fiber jumpers, and it is fully compatible with OM3 and OM4 fiber jumpers and highly interoperable.
What is the difference?
The difference between OM5 fiber jumper and OM4 fiber jumper
In structure, there is no difference between OM5 fiber jumper and OM4 fiber jumper, and OM5 fiber jumper is compatible with OM4 fiber jumper. In addition, there are still differences between the two. Below is a comparison between OM5 fiber jumpers and OM4 fiber jumpers.
Different colors: the outer jacket color of OM5 fiber jumper is water green; and the outer jacket color of OM4 fiber jumper is water blue.
Different wavelengths: The wavelength of OM5 fiber jumper is generally 850 / 1300nm, and it can support at least 4 wavelengths at a time; and the wavelength of OM4 fiber jumper is generally 850 / 1310nm, which can only support 1 wavelength at a time.
Different transmission distances: In the case of the same wavelength, the transmission distance of OM5 fiber jumpers is generally longer than that of OM4 fiber jumpers.
The transmission rate is different: the transmission rate of OM5 fiber jumper is 40Gb / s, 100Gb / s; and the transmission rate of OM4 fiber jumper is 10Gb / s, 40Gb / s, 100Gb / s.
The effective mode bandwidth (EMB) is different: at 850nm wavelength, the effective mode bandwidth (EMB) of the OM5 fiber jumper is 6000MHZ.km, and the effective mode bandwidth (EMB) of the OM4 fiber jumper is 4700MHZ.km, for this OM5 fiber The effective mode bandwidth EMB of the jumper is much higher than that of the OM4 fiber jumper.

how to choose?

The performance of OM5 fiber jumper is much higher than that of OM4 fiber jumper. As a choice for future data centers, OM5 fiber jumpers surpass OM4 fiber jumpers in terms of effective mode bandwidth (EMB), which means that they can provide extra space for Ethernet and give the data center more vitality. However, when the transmission rate cannot reach 40Gb / s, considering the cost, choosing OM4 fiber patch cord is the best solution.
