By connector type

The connector decides the cleaning accessories, the ferrule size the inspection scope needs to accept, and which field assembly connectors belong in the case. SC, LC, FC, ST, MU and MPO fiber optic connectors all sit on either a 2.5 mm or 1.25 mm ferrule, and SC/APC and SC/UPC polish types are not interchangeable at the cleave angle. If the kit will be used on LC connectors for 0.9, 2.0 and 3.0 mm cable, the swabs and one-click cleaner must be the 1.25 mm variants.

 

By fiber and cable size

Strippers are cut for specific diameters, so list the cable the crew handles before choosing: 250 µm coated fiber, 900 µm tight buffer, 2.0 mm and 3.0 mm jacketed cable, and flat FTTH drop cable. A kit that only strips 900 µm will stall the first time a technician opens a drop cable at a fiber termination box.

How the Tools Are Used Together

 

Insertion loss problems are usually created before any tester is connected. The jacket is opened, the coating is stripped, the fiber is cleaved, and only then is it joined — each step decided the loss of the next one. The two routes for terminating fiber optic cable are a fusion splice or a pre-polished mechanical connector, and both begin with the same preparation tools in the same tool kit.

Before mating, contamination on the ferrule matters more than most technicians expect: a single particle on the core is enough to raise back reflection and scar the end face under pressure. That is why cleaning fiber optic connectors with swabs and lint-free wipes, then confirming the fiber end face under 200× magnification, belongs in the routine rather than in the troubleshooting stage.

 

For final proof, a visual fault locator shows breaks, tight bends and polarity errors over short spans, while an optical power meter gives the loss number. Long-haul link characterisation and event location still call for an optical time domain reflectometer, which is normally carried separately from the hand tool case.
